/ Reasons for Low Oil Pressure at Idle The flickering oil indicator light in your speedometer is a clear sign of something being wrong with your car. Here are some things you might want to check, to see if all is well with your precious car. The oil flows through the spaces too easily and the pump can no longer maintain pressure at idle. The pump itself is simply a couple of impellers that look like two gears through which the oil passes as they’re turned by the engine. No oil pressure at idle, but it raises when RPMs raise.? I thought that when main bearings go bad, pressure drops when you rev the engine. My pressure is at 0, but it goes up to 20-25 pounds when the engine is revved. On many older vehicles, an oil pressure gauge in the instrument cluster gave a visual indication of actual oil pressure, usually topping out at 50 to 60 psi. Most modern vehicles, though, have done away with the oil pressure gauge, replacing it with a simple low oil pressure warning light, which illuminates when oil pressure drops below 5 to 7 psi. When warmed up, oil pressure at idle is 13 psi, up from 8 psi with 5W-30 oil earlier in the day. At 3500 rpm, it is only 35 psi. Looks like I'll need to reread the links grumpy posted to see if there are causes listed for low pressure at moderate to high rpm. But after the engine warmed up, the oil pressure dropped below normal at idle and the engine noise (probably lifters) returned. Raising the engine speed to above 1000 rpm causes the oil pressure to increase to about 45 psi. If the engine speed is increased even more, oil pressure tops out at about 55 psi.
The flickering oil indicator light in your speedometer is a clear sign of something However, ideally the oil pressure should never go too low. This website uses cookies to improve your experience while you navigate through the website.

The oil you use in your engine could cause a low oil pressure for your engine. If you are using a 0w-20 oil SAE on an engine that requires 5w-50 oil you could get a low oil pressure when the engine is hot. Some engines do have a larger bearing play and require a thicker oil to get the correct oil pressure at idle. / Reasons for Low Oil Pressure at Idle The flickering oil indicator light in your speedometer is a clear sign of something being wrong with your car. Engine Oil Pressure Gauge On Dash. When the oil reaches the pump it is then forced through the filter and then through the engine. However, As the oil is still cold and the oil galleries are very narrow, flow is slow and a large back pressure develops so that the pressure gauge registers a dramatic pressure increase. The pressure increases with thicker oil because the resistance to flow increases. DO NOT sacrifice flow volume for pressure. Most of your engine wear comes at startup, and running a thicker oil will lead to more wear upon startup, since it can't flow like the thinner oil. Pressure does not equal lubrication, flow equals lubrication.
