Conventional versus unconventional oil and gas

Conventional vs. unconventional Unconventional petroleum resources are oil and gas found in a variety of rocks that need to be extracted using additional technology, energy or investment to release the resource from the source rock. Unconventional resource development usually requires extensive well fields and more surface infrastructure.

18 Mar 2019 Keywords: shale revolution; shale oil and gas; horizontal drilling; economy; ecology conventional or unconventional oil is a matter of global energy market and L.E.; Writing—Supervision, Review and Editing, V.S. and E.S.. Conventional oil and gas are hydrocarbons that have been accumulated in reservoirs with good oil-water or gas-water contact. These resources are relatively easy to obtain by utilizing the natural pressure from the well and pumping operations. Unconventional Oil & Gas. Sometimes unconventional drilling methods are used due to increasing scarcity of retrieving oil and gas using conventional methods. Not always, is a pocket of oil and gas available to be retrieved by drilling and pressure naturally allowing the flow of gas. In this case, unconventional drilling comes in handy. To get a better understanding, let’s take a look at what the industry considers conventional vs. unconventional. Conventional Oil. Since the 1800’s, American’s have been punching holes in the ground to extract oil and gas. This involved drilling a straight hole into the ground and hitting a pool of oil better known as a reservoir. Conventional versus Unconventional Oil and Gas Conventional Resources are concentrations of oil or gas that occur in discrete accumulations or pools. Rock formations hosting these pools traditionally have high porosity and permeability and are found below impermeable rock formations. These impervious layers form barriers to hydrocarbon migration resulting in oil and gas being trapped below them. Summary Despite the terms, conventional and unconventional oil refers to the method of oil extraction. While unconventional methods have grown more prominent over the past several years, conventional oil methods are still used. It’s important to recognize that when used together, both methods can maximize extraction from a single location. The difference between conventional and unconventional is relatively straightforward, and has to do mostly with the ease the fuels can be extracted with. Conventional oil or gas comes from formations that are "normal" or straightforward to extract product from. Extracting fossil fuels from these geological formations can be done with standard methods that can be used to economically remove the fuel from the deposit.
